Whole school STEM Spectacular

8th December 2022C Henderson

This week, the KAPLA project has given us the opportunity to develop our STEM skills.

Logical thinking – develops spatial awareness and enhances awareness of shape, volume and sense of balance whilst developing manual dexterity.

Stimulating creativity – enhances creative thinking and children to express their artisitic talents.

Concentration, patience and perseverance.

Teamwork – communication and cooperation.

We also demonstarted all of our school values- showing RESPECT to others, taking RESPONSIBILITY, demonstrating ENGAGEMENT and showing amazing RESILIENCE when the project became tricky.

We would like to thank Kapla for an amazing two day project and a massive thank you to all of our volunteer helpers who were invaluable!

Diwali – The Festival of Lights

16th November 2022C Henderson

This week, EYFS explored the Hindu festival Diwali – the Festival of Lights. We discovered why the celebration is important to Hindu’s, how they prepare for the festival and what you might see during Diwali. We found out that they spring clean their homes in preparation, they exchange gifts and share family meals, they watch firework displays and they light up their homes to invite the Goddess Lakshmi. We enjoyed creating our own diva lamps that we decorated with our special adults at home.

Early Years Explorers

21st October 2022C Henderson
Throughout the year, EYFS will be taking part in three ‘Exploration Sessions’ to support our understanding of the world around us and our local community. We will be supporting our knowledge of our local area with first hand experiences, noticing the features of our environment as we go.
This autumn term, our first Exploration Session was called ‘The Journey to Forest School’. We were very excited to go on our first adventure and explore our school grounds! We travelled through the red door, walked next to our outdoor area, over the big bridge, through the wild willow den, around the statue, across the path and we marched past the bushes to arrive at the huge gate!
Reception used their knowledge of their journey to Forest School to create their own maps of our immediate area.

Storytime Workshop

28th September 2022C Henderson

We welcomed our wonderful reception parents/carers into school this week for a special storytime workshop. Mrs Flynn shared information about how we support children in reception with phonics and early reading/writing. Ideas were shared with parents/carers about how they can support their children at home. Our reception children then joined us to explore some of these interactive learning opportunities with their special adults. We loved having the opportunity to share our learning in school, and want to thank all of our fantastic parents/carers who were able to join us.

Early Years Bear Hunt!

27th September 2021Gemma Hudson

We have loved reading the Bear Hunt Story in our Early Years setting. It is one of our five key texts this term and we adore it!

The children have enjoyed reciting the repetitive vocabulary and joining in with the corresponding actions. We have had fun recreating the bear hunt trail in our outdoor area! We waded through the long wavy grass, squelched through the thick oozy mud, splashed through the deep cold river and stumbled tripped through the big dark forest.

We have also enjoyed acting out the bear hunt story using the small world story props as well as sequencing key elements of the story.  Some of the language the children have used has been incredible and we are very proud of them!

School Council Welcome Kate Osborne MP

25th June 2021C Henderson

Today our school council welcomed Jarrow MP Kate Osborne to Valley View.

Ms Osborne enjoyed a tour of the school before entering into a challenging question and answer session with the School Council.

The children did lots of research to prepare for the meeting. They asked  about the Women and Equalities Committee, what they could do about climate change, how they could get more money for fun equipment in school and if Kate Osborne MP had ever met Boris Johnson !

The Student Council made a great impression  Kate Osborne commended them all praising the excellent selection process the school used to elect school councillors.

We look forward to another meeting soon!
